With around 200.000 habitants Split is the second largest Croatian town as well as the historical, administrative and economic capital of Dalmatia. Over 1700 years ago on the peninsula filled with yellow Spanish broom flowers the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build a magnificent residence where , after abdication, he spent his retirement days. This palace was built at the end of the 3rd century and it became the stone nucleus of todays town. The town which with its boiling temperament and colours represents one of the most impressive urban Mediterranean destinations.

Even today Diocletian's Palace is the town within the town. Playful and charming, colourful and noisy, filled with local inhabitants but during the summer season it is crowded with tourists from around the world. The Palace is also a unique monument inserted in the UNESCO's World Heritage List. In its centre the glorious bell tower of St. Duje rises as some sacred guardian of the world's smallest cathedral, and in front of this cathedral lies the beautiful square Peristil which will take Your breath away with its monumental columns, Egyptian sphinx, Roman temples and attractive facades of Gothic and Renaissance palaces. Split is situated on a peninsula, surrounded by the Adriatic sea on three sides and most of its coast is used as beaches and promenades. The wooded hill Marjan, dominates the west part of the town and there You can sunbathe on the various beaches on the sunny South side or spend Your time in the shade of pines on the North side of the hill. All the way to the east side of the town beside of modern neighbourhoods You can visit amazing pebble and sand beaches with various beach bars and clubs where You can have fun all day and night. The most popular beach is Bačvice situated near the City Harbour, it is the bathing resort with a hundred years tradition. Bačvice beach is famous for its shallow waters suitable for playing picigin - an authentic sport in this region and a popular tourist attraction. This sport is played during the whole year, it is played in teams of five players (men or women) with specially made balls and The World Championship is organised every June.

The abundant sport history of this "most sporty city in the world" („najsportskiji grad na svitu“) originated on the Bačvice beach. Since 1948. sportsmen of this city have won 97 Olympic medals. To honour their worthy sportsmen, the citizens of Split established Split Sport Hall of Fame (Kuća slave splitskog sporta) an interesting place for all sports enthusiasts to visit.
